[Bookplate for Alfred C. Harmsworth] Black ink on cream paper. Crest features a crest-wreath with a knight’s right arm extended and bent at the elbow. The arm is armoured with a point at the elbow and circular decorations on the rest of the arm. The hand clutches a sword that has gone through a small lion’s head from the chin through to the crown. The lion has whiskers, but no mane. Below the crest, the bookplate owner’s name is written in black, sentence case, gothic font. 2. [Bookplate for Basil Thomas Woodd by Benjamin Warwick] In black ink. This bookplate consists of an escutcheon, parted per pale. The first pale is parted per quarter. Quarters one and four, gules (red), are charged with three demi-Hercules, two over one. Quarters two and three, sable (black), are charged with gryphons rampant, segreant. The second pale is parted per quarter. Quarters one and four, or (gold), charged with a lion rampant, sable, on a chief, gules, in the middle part a fillet, dovetailed, argent (silver). Quarters two and three, azure (blue), are charged with a fleur-de-lis. The escutcheon is set upon a backdrop of concentric circles. The inner circle is decorated with vine-like patterns. Within the outer circle, the originator's Latin motto "non nobis" appears. Below the concentric circles, the creator's signature and address, Benjn. Warwick 124 Regent Street appear. Above the circle is a peer helmet, surrounded by vegetative mantling, and atop the helmet is a straight wreath charged with a demi-figure of Hercules. (Bernard Burke considers the Hercules figures to be woodmen holding a club over their right shoulders or savages, depending upon the source consulted). 3. [Bookplate for Bibliothek des Herzoglichen Appellationsgerichts zu Altenburg and Michael B. Kunze] The escutcheon is barry of ten pieces, sable (black) and or (gold), containing a vert (green) riband with an engrailed sinister edge. The shield is mounted within a crowned and tied-back coat. 4. [Bookplate for Charles Perrin Smith] This bookplate consists of a very detailed coat of arms, which is divided per pale. The first half at dexter has fifteen quarterings, which are as follows: azure (blue) with a chevron argent (silver), charged with a crescent, between three cocks ; sable (black) charged with three griffin's heads erased ; sable and argent (silver) divided per fess with a lion rampant ; argent charged with a lion passant, between three fleur de lis, two over one ; gules and argent, divided quarterly, charged with four lions passant ; or (gold) charged with a lion gules rampant ; ermine (fur) charged with a lion sable rampant ; azure with a chevron argent, between three cocks ; gules with two lions passant, one above the other ; ermines and sable, divided per bend sinister, charged with a lion sable rampant ; argent, a bordure engrailed or charged with three Griffin's heads, erased gules ; argent and gules, divided per quarterly, quarters one and four argent, charged with three boars' heads and quarters two and th. 5. [Bookplate for Cornelia Anthony and Michael B. Kunze] Brown ink on tan paper. Double border and garland frame two reading cherubs acting as bookends. Illegible artist signature at bottom right. 6. [Bookplate for D. Girouard] Black ink on cream paper. Crest features right arm bent at elbow holding the top half of a spear on crest-wreath. Shield has sable and argent stripes, charged with three two-pointed flags two speckled sable on argent flags over one argent flag facing left. The top two flags are speckled, sable on argent, and the bottom flag is argent. Below the shield, the motto is printed in capital letters on ribbon with curling ends. Name typewritten in cursive sentence font. 7. [Bookplate for Frank John Joseph] Black ink on cream paper. The crest features a bushel of wheat tied with a ribbon around the center atop a crest-wreath. Shield is divided per chevron. The background is black and it is charged with five smaller bushels three over two. The three bushels are above the chevron and the remaining two are below. The shield is decorated with an elaborate white border. Below the shield, the motto is printed in black, capitalized, block sans serif font on a curling ribbon with decorative ends. Underneath the motto, the bookplate owner’s name is printed in black, sentence case gothic font. 8. [Bookplate for Gamble Geddes] Black ink on cream paper. Crest features half a fish hauriant showing a fin, gills, and a head with teeth atop a crest-wreath. Sable shield charged with three of the aforementioned fish heads two over one and an argent insecutcheon. There is a ribbon-like banner with the motto below the shield with curling ends. Each side of the ribbon is angled towards a downward point. On the left side is text in capitalized black serif-font. The right side of the ribbon overlaps the left and has text in the same font. Below the motto, the owner’s name is written in curling sentence-case font. 9. [Bookplate for Gerald Lynham Porte Grant-Suttie] In black ink on white paper, this bookplate consists of a shield Azure (blue), three eagles displayed two over one, a chief, Or (gold), a demi-lion rampant queue fourche. Issuing out of a Crown Vallary, the crest of a demi-lion rampant queue fourche and holding in the forepaws a star of seven points. Below the escutcheon, a banner bears the motto 'VINCIT QUI POSSE CREDIT' [Latin = He who believes that he can, succeeds]. 10. [Bookplate for Gilbert Finlay Girdwood] Black ink on white paper. Argent and sable with a straight line down the middle. Left hand side is sable and argent per pale charged with three castle towers, two over one. Right hand side is argent, with a chevron engrailed sable. Chevron surrounded by three roundlets sable, two over one. Shield is wrapped in stylized bordure. At the top, is a crest featuring a demi-lion rampant guardant, tail extended holding a tree in its right paw. Lion sits on a crest-wreath. Below is a motto on a stylized banner with decorative ends. The bottom of the bookplate has typed cursive fond followed by serif font. 11. [Bookplate for Henry Augustus Sims] In red ink on white paper, a border that contains red and black text and black decorative designs. Within the border, in black ink, there is an angled Escutcheon parted per pale. The dexter side is gules (red), containing a chevronel or (gold) with two mullets of six points, pierced, in chief, and one battle axe in base. The sinister side is quartered per cross by a cross argent (silver), with the dexter chief and sinister base quarters in azure (blue) and the sinister chief and dexter base quarters in gules. In each quarter save the sinister base there is a pheon proper. Above the Esctucheon, the mantling is topped by a wreath, from which a lion emerges, holding a battle axe. Below the Escutcheon is a banner bearing the motto, 'Ferio Tego.'. 12. [Bookplate for Henry Flitcroft] In black ink, this chippendale-style bookplate consists of an asymmetrical escutcheon, or (gold), containing two chevronels, gules (red), each with the appearance of a label. The top chevronel is an elevated label, while the base chevronel is an inverted label. The label is a heraldic symbol representing the first son. The escutcheon also contains two escalopes over one fleur-de-lis. In typical chippendale fashion, the escutcheon is surrounded by elaborate floral mantling. Below the escutcheon is a banner containing the originator's name and place of origin. 13. [Bookplate for Holland House] In black ink , a chapeau crimson (red), lined with ermine (white powdered fur with black tufts), a fox sejant, or (gold), floating above is a coronet of a baron. 14. [Bookplate for Hugh Lyle Smyth] In black ink, this bookplate consists of an escutcheon, argent (silver), containing an invected bend, azure (blue). The escutcheon is charged with two unicorn heads, gules (red) and erased, at dexter base and sinister chief ; the bend is charged with three lozenges, ermine (white powdered fur with black tufts). Above the escutcheon is a dexter closed helmet, which is topped by a ducal coronet and a unicorn head, gules and erased, with lozenge, ermine. From either side of the helmet flows elaborate mantling. Below the escutcheon is a banner containing the Latin motto. 15. [Bookplate for J. H. Hagarty] Black ink on cream paper. Crest features an armoured arm holding on to a sabre. The arm is coming out of a crest-wreath. The shield is argent with a sable chief. The chief is charged with three white birds trussed. The bottom section of the shield is argent and charged with a tall, leafy tree. The tree has three roots extending out. Below the shield, the motto is printed on a curling ribbon in capitalized, block, sans serif white letters. Below the motto, the bookplate owner’s name is printed in large, black, sentence case, cursive font. 16. [Bookplate for J. Hunt Stanford] An armorial bookplate printed in black ink on white paper. A buck couped argent (silver) with antlers or (gold) gorged gules (red) with a crest wreath, argent and azure (silver and blue), sits on a visored helm facing dextor with argent mantling. The shield: argent three bars azure, and in the dextor canton azure an arm or clenched with sword. The motto, 'Labore et honore' hangs below. 17. [Bookplate for J. W. Longley by Francis Adams Sc.] Black ink on white paper. The crest features an arm grasping a dagger. The blade of the dagger has pierced the head of a bearded man that resembles a lion head. The arm is atop a crest-wreath. The wreath sits on a flower with a round center and 5 petals. To strips extend out of the flower across the front and back of a ribbon, connecting to the top of the shield. The ribbon extends straight out with curling ends. The motto is printed on the ribbon in black, capitalized, serif font. Shield is ermine with a black bend. Bend charged with three cheetah heads. The shield features a sinister canton paly. Underneath the shield, the bookplate owner’s name is printed in large, black, sentence case, gothic font. More text is printed below the name in smaller, black, capitalized, serif font. 18. [Bookplate for Jenkins] Black ink on cream paper. The crest features a furry lion passant reguardant standing atop a castle tower. The castle tower is above a crest-wreath. Elaborate, curling, feathery black and white mantling extends from the top of the shield and expands out along the sides. The shield is divided per pale. The left section has a white background with black dots and is charged with a black lion rampant reguardant. The right section of the shield is charged with a bird perched on a tree branch growing out of the ground. There is no background except for the branch and ground that is lighter on top and darker at the bottom. The motto is printed on a curling ribbon below the shield. There is shading on the ends of the ribbon. The motto is printed in capitalized, black, serif font. The bookplate owner’s name is printed in a more stylized, paler, capitalized, black serif font underneath the motto. 19. [Bookplate for John Charles Alison Heriot by Graham Johnston] This bookplate's design features, in black ink, an escutcheon, argent (silver), charged on the fess with three cinque foils within an indented bordure. Above the escutcheon is a tilting helmet, charged with a straight wreath and a dexter hand couped at the wrist, which holds a laurel wreath aloft. Decorative vegetative mantling surrounds the escutcheon within the bounds of a rectangular frame. Behind the laurel wreath, waves a banner containing the bookplate originator's Latin motto and below the coat of arms is a separate compartment containing the originator's name. This bookplate appears to be a smaller version of BP MUR SL P H475b, but the creator's initials are barely visible amongst the mantling. 20. [Bookplate for John Charles Alison Heriot by Graham Johnston] This bookplate's design features, in black ink, an escutcheon, argent (silver), charged on the fess with three cinque foils within an indented bordure. Above the escutcheon is a tilting helmet, charged with a straight wreath and a dexter hand couped at the wrist, which holds a laurel wreath aloft. Decorative vegetative mantling surrounds the escutcheon within the bounds of a rectangular frame. The bookplate designer's initials and the date of creation are hidden among the mantling. Behind the laurel wreath, waves a banner containing the bookplate originator's Latin motto and below the coat of arms is a separate compartment containing the originator's name.
